Bread is an Italian table staple.
This was the rise of Sud Forno. Fascinated by the art of bread making, Cosimo decided to bring this craft in-house to be able to offer all his guests an artisanal bread, both with their meals and to be taken home. Knowing little about bread-baking, he found a master baker in Italy to come and teach us how it’s done. After months of experimenting, the first sourdough bread got the seal of approval as well as a number of other varieties and in 2013, our first official bakery, just a few steps down from the original Terroni on Queen Street, was born.
Alongside bread, we started to make Italian pastries, pizza stirata and other baked goods. As a result, Sud Forno became a neighbourhood hub with a distinctly Italian sensorial experience; your morning cappuccino with a fresh cornetto, the smell of fresh bread lining the walls, the chatter of the local community. Sud Forno is that kind of place where you can stop in at any time of day and have a host of carefully prepared, home-ready meals to choose from to take home or dine-in on the long communal table or by the bar.
Enjoy coffee, a meal or after-work glass of wine in an environment of unmistakable Italianita’, where vintage Italian signage and warm, inviting design features complement the overall experience.
Four years after the first Sud Forno opened in 2017, a second, larger location at Yonge and Temperance in Toronto’s downtown core opened its doors. Echoing Cosimo and Elena’s love of architecture, this two-floor heritage building offered an abundance of seating and space to make freshly baked and homemade products. Same concept, but with the added square footage, we decided to make this Sud Forno slightly different from the first by offering a full-service restaurant. During the day you’ll encounter La Mensa, Sud Forno Temperance’s cafeteria-style eatery offering both hot and cold options to grab and go or stay. The sit-down restaurant has a number of traditional dishes not found on the Terroni menu. The elegant and intimate dining space on the second floor called Da Geppetto is in homage to Cosimo’s father who was a savvy carpenter that lovingly used his skills to help build the various Terroni restaurants.
Welcoming and embracing via all the senses. Cool, casual, cozy and warm. Neighbourhood destination.
Grab-and-go, get your Italian essentials or dine-in at our full service restaurant, Sud Forno has something for everyone.
